In tonight's programme

THURSDAY 12 JULY 22:30 BST - BBC TWO
FROM GAVIN ESLER

Hello,

Today's Quote for the Day

"In this trailer, there is a sequence that implies the Queen left a sitting prematurely. This was not the case and the actual sequence of events was misrepresented."

BBC apology over a promotional trailer which seemed to suggest that the Queen had stormed out at the end of a photo-shoot with Annie Leibovitz. She didn't.

In tonight's programme:

The Queen and the BBC

How could the BBC make such a mistake? We'll try to find out. Especially since it comes after the BBC was fined 50,000 pounds by OFCOM for misleading viewers of Blue Peter over a phone-in competition.

Iraq

I've been thumbing through the "Initial Benchmark Assessment Report" to the US Congress on Iraq. Some progress - a mixed bag. What will be the political implications when - as we reported on Tuesday - some prominent Republicans are already uneasy?

Fundraising

We're Live at Wembley for a big Labour fundraising rally. How much difficulty are all the parties in when it comes to raising cash?

Turkey

One of the most important yet under-covered stories is the future of this pivotal country right between Europe and the Middle East. Elections coming up; unease in the army; Turkish troops massing on the Iraq border. We've a special report.

And finally

Today's Joke Fit For an Eleven year Old comes from a Newsnight viewer who is remaining anonymous for his own safety:

A group of chess enthusiasts, when checking into a hotel, stand in the lobby loudly discussing recent victories.

After a few minutes the manager bursts out of his office and starts shouting at the group, telling them to get lost.

"Why are you being so unpleasant?" asks one.

"Because," says the manager, "I just can't stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer."

Newsnight is at 10.30pm on BBC2.
