WEDNESDAY 18 JULY 22:30 BST - BBC TWO
FROM GAVIN ESLER

Hello,

Today's Quote for the Day
"Phoning a TV show isn't like ordering pizza. When you put the phone down, nothing arrives."
Richard Ayre who led the Ofcom inquiry which talked of a "systemic failure" of compliance with the rules on TV call- in shows.

Trust?
The BBC has promised a very significant and far-reaching plan of action to tackle "totally unacceptable" incidents of editorial failure. I'll be interviewing the director general of the BBC, Mark Thompson, on what he can do to restore trust in the organisation, and we'll be discussing Ofcom's finding of a "systemic failure" throughout the TV industry.

Political Islam
We've an authored film from a former member of the extremist Islamist group Hizb ut Tahrir.

Brown is not Blair
Another attempt to distance himself from the Blair years today from Gordon Brown - opening up the possibility of re-classifying cannabis as a harder drug than at present. Is this part of a clear strategy by the new PM to repudiate bits of his predecessor's legacy without overtly saying so? Is it a good idea? Will it work?

And finally: Newsnight viewer Dave kelly sent in the following Joke Fit For an Eleven Year Old...

As you know, Mahatma Gandhi walked barefoot most of the time - this produced an impressive set of callouses on his feet. He also ate very little which made him rather frail. Additionally with his odd diet he suffered from bad breath. This made him a super-calloused, fragile mystic, hexed by halitosis.

(Personally I prefer the memorable newspaper headline when Celtic were beaten by Inverness Caley: "Super Caley Go Ballistic / Celtic are Atrocious." )

Newsnight is on BBC 2 at 10.30pm.

Gavin
